The Ocean
This is a poem I wrote the first day I arrived in Vancouver last fall to search for an apartment:
THE OCEAN
The ocean is where I belong
The sea is where I must be
an October day in the sun
The waves along the beach do run
here ships are ships
not mere boats
here great castles of steel
are towering floats
with the clear blue sky
as their overcoats.
A lone swimmer in the sea
pounding the surf
as hard as can be
years ago on an Oregon beach
such a swimmer was me.
Autumn trees with colours of gold
against majestic mountains bold.
The horizon stretches on and on
in this bay that's seen
great ships come and gone.
Across the sea lie the lands of Asia
and I think of friends
in Japan and Malaysia
India and Singapore
the Philippines
with Imelda's shoes galore
Australia where koalas can snore
when eagles' reckless speeches do bore.
