Hurricane Ophelia: A Poem

Hurricane Ophelia: A Poem

Hamlet said, "Soft you now,
The fair Ophelia- Nymph..."
But Hurricane Ophelia of 2017 is neither fair nor a nymph
A hurricane hitting Ireland
and Britain with hurricane winds
Bringing with her the desert sands of Saharan Africa
Turning the sun red and the sky yellow
as if foreshadowing an apocalypse to come.

When The Stars Don't Shine: A Poem

When The Stars Don't Shine: A Poem

What is it like when the stars don't shine?
When the dark of night is just that...
the dark of night
When the moon is nowhere to be seen
and someone has turned off the stars
as if they were gas lights on cobbled streets of yesteryear
This is my hour in my own Garden of Gethsemane
and someone has turned off the stars
Deliver me, O Lord!

Mountains Blue: A Poem

Mountains Blue: A Poem

Mountains blue
lakes so green
a national park so clean
This is Banff
jewel of the Alberta Rockies

Not far Lake Louise
where British singer Vera Lynn
The songstress of World War II
longed to dance on its silvery banks

And not far from that
Castle Mountain
once called Eisenhower
after World War II
It stands a solid rock
much like that great general

There is Tunnel Mountain
and Mount Rundle
and Cascade Mountain
whose majestic beauty
cascades in view
down the street
of Banff Avenue

There is Banff Hot Springs
and gondola rides
In winter, Banff is
post card Christmas village
come alive

There is Lake Minnewanka
a glacial lake at park's east end
There is Moraine Lake
and the Valley of the Ten Peaks
south of Lake Louise
whose beauty graces $20 bills
in this Land of the Maple Leaf

Mountains blue
lakes so green
Banff one of Mother Nature's jewels
waiting to be seen

You Can Still Hear The Sky Larks Sing: A Poem

You Can Still Hear The Sky Larks Sing: A Poem

You can still hear the sky larks sing
And the guns are no longer heard
Poppies still blow between the crosses row on row
101 years since John McCrae penned the words to In Flanders Fields
And many more cemeteries and graveyards have been sown all over the world
the seeds of numerous wars that have been fought since that so-called Great War from 100 years ago
Would Kaiser Wilhelm II, Emperor Franz Joseph, Czar Nicholas II and the leaders of France and Britain gone to war to enforce their petty quarrels and jealousies and nationalistic pride if they knew the sheer Hell and chaos and hundreds of millions of deaths that would have resulted over the next century as a result of their quarrel and desire to go to war?
If any of them were monsters, they'd have said Yes
If any of them were men, they'd have said No
Their conflict and their decision to go to war did set the stage for the rise of monsters
Hitler, Tojo, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and numerous others
When humans stumble in their humanity, monsters will rise in their wake

The Scent of A Garden: A Poem

The Scent of A Garden: A Short Poem

The scent of a garden
Hyacinth and cherry blossom
Perfume of nature
so pleasing
